Women of the ELCA

The parent organization of the Women of the ELCA states, “As a community of women created in the image of God called to discipleship in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society and the world.”

The Spruce Run Women of the ELCA group holds its meetings at 12:00 PM on the third Wednesday of every month. All women of the church are automatically members and we always welcome new women to our meetings.

Our gatherings begin with a brunch followed by a short business meeting and a program that includes a topic of interest. Our yearly social event is held in May when we venture away from the church. Past activities on this day have included trips to the Lebanon Township Museum and the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. The day usually concludes with lunch at a local restaurant. Our summer picnic is held in July at the home of one of our members.

At our meetings, we always receive a Thank Offering donation which is designated for outreach. Organizations that have benefited from the Thank Offerings include Lutheran Social Ministries, Anderson House, Safe in Hunterdon, the ELCA Malaria Campaign, SeaFarers & International House, and cancer research at Wake Forest University Hospital. Within the congregation, we also sponsor the Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday, and Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day carnation sales. The proceeds from those activities are donated to the North Hunterdon Community Food Pantry. Our annual “Pic ‘n Pak” cookie sale at Jingle Bell Junction is always a huge success. A portion of our proceeds from that event is designated for outreach.

Most recently some of our members traveled to the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia to attend the eighth annual Rest, Refreshment and Renewal Women’s Day.  The presentations and workshops at these events are always informative and enjoyable.

The December meeting of the Women of the ELCA is a time of joy and fellowship during which we have a pot luck brunch, a brief business meeting, and a gift exchange.  At this meeting, we also reveal our secret Prayer Partners and choose our new ones for the coming year.

As a member organization of the New Jersey Women of the ELCA, we also participate in the yearly Thank Service at a New Jersey church and the yearly convention for all New Jersey units.

We are an enthusiastic group that enjoys being a part of the mission and ministry at Spruce Run Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church.
